History: Canon Wiki and Rin’s Wikia
Personality: Rin has been around fighting, blood, and killing all his life, or at least the majority of it that he can remember clearly, and that has been a major factor as to why he's like how he is presently. Battle and death can change a person in many different ways, but the way it has shaped Rin can be viewed as fairly strange if one can't understand it properly, and if one isn't aware of his past and what drives him to continue living and fighting on in a desolate, run down place like Toshima.
Upon shallow examination, Rin is a very carefree soul, always seeming to be smiling and playing around. Most of the time, it appears like he doesn't have a care or worry in the world because he seems unaffected by even the harshest of situations or sights. When he's found in the building Akira and Keisuke have been staying in by the two, surrounded by multiple unconscious bodies of people he'd just finished fighting, Rin is in the middle of taking pictures of the bodies and turns with a wide smile, welcoming them back. He is, what a person might call, desensitized to violence and death. His confidence in himself doesn't stem from nothing and is not without reason. He has the ability and freedom to be as laid back and rash as he is because of a strength, resilience, and resourcefulness that might not seem to fit him, whether because of his delicate, effeminate looks which cause him to be mistaken for a girl many times or his childish personality that often has others incorrectly underestimating him.
Rin is very perceptive, and in that regard he is also kind, considerate, and helpful, especially towards those he comes to care for. He can tell when someone is upset or having a tough time, or if they're in need of assistance, and he won't hold back in questioning people about their well-being. After an argument between Akira and Keisuke, the latter runs away, clearly upset, and Rin's first instinct is to run after him. He is stopped from doing so, but doesn't leave the situation as it is, instead focusing on the friend that is still there, curling up with Akira on a couch to share photos he's taken, telling him stories in hopes of cheering him up or, at the least, distracting him from what's bothering him. It is shown that even while doing this, Rin had been thinking about how to help Keisuke, eventually coming up with a plan to go to a movie theatre that is a known neutral zone, where many people gathered, in order to get information on where their friend might be. Even when only just meeting Akira and Keisuke, once he learns that one is in need of a weapon, he generously offers him a knife of his, clearly not seeing him as a threat, and later trades for water and food for the two using his own tags (which he collected from defeating countless Igura participants). He worries significantly for his friends when they are in danger or harmed and he often makes a fuss over such situations to an extent that might seem annoying even if understandable, such as getting angry with Akira after hearing that he'd carelessly left behind supplies Rin had gotten for him. In an affromentioned scene, Rin had shown up in the building his friends had been staying in to warn them that staying in one place for too long was dangerous, which proved to be true when there were already several men there hoping to catch them off-guard.
Rin is prone to pouting, sticking out his tongue, calling people names and playing pranks on them, and speaking in a sing-song, kid-like voice. Though Rin is rather young and feminine-looking, he is quite crass with his words and actions. When mistaken for a girl by both Akira and Keisuke, he apologizes teasingly and crudely states that he's, in fact, “packing”, flustering one of the two. Not easily made embarrassed or self-conscious, he makes lewd comments without a care, such as suggesting that Akira pay him back for his help “with his body”, and is called noisy thanks to his hyperactive, invasive nature.
He likes to tease people, trick and flirt with them for the fun of it to see their reactions, and seems to see nothing wrong with the way he acts with how open he is to admitting playful things he has done. During his first appearance, he tries to trick Akira and Keisuke into paying a toll for walking into his territory without permission, though he lets them off because of how attractive Akira is, and then later on he reveals that the toll was all a lie. Rin is a very active young man who finds it hard to sit still and do nothing. He always has energy flowing through his veins, and even if he doesn't he can still force himself to keep moving, showing a stubbornness that doesn't seem to care too much about his own health because of how he’ll push himself beyond his limits even when severely injured especially when trying to fulfil his goal. Don't mistake his childishness for naivety, however, because he is most often the very opposite of being that.
Rin makes a point to remind people to not trust others too much because there's no telling who will take advantage of you or betray you. Although he tends to make this seem almost like a light-hearted affair and joke, by seeming to trust all too easily, he actually takes this concept very seriously, making a point to showcase this to Akira by leaving him by himself while he's sleeping after saying he would stay and watch over him, leaving behind a photo of Akira, fast asleep, with the words "It's dangerous to trust people so easily. Watch out" written on the back. In routes other than his own in the game, little is ever discovered about him, and even in his own route his secrets are only revealed much later. He has gotten the hang of knowing just what to trust people with and what not to, and he is actually a very guarded person even though he appears very open and uncaring. Often times he'll hide his thoughts and feelings behind bright, winning smiles and an always cheerful demeanour, especially after he slips up and shows how cold and harsh he can be without meaning to. It’s easy to be caught up with this and his fast pace, which is exactly what he wants so that people won’t see through him and find out more about him than he wants them to know.
This brings attention to something very major having to do with Rin's personality and his life. He is a very childish and friendly person, cheerful and bright, but there is an entirely different side to him that gets hidden behind masks of easy-going smiles. The other side of him is icy, cold and distant, cruel and driven by a dark need to fulfill a desire of his that he is willing and prepared to die for, because he will stop at nothing and no one will prevent him from reaching this goal. This side is almost always hidden, only glimpses of it shown when his brother, Shiki, is involved, whether it's from Akira finding a photo of him or from someone mentioning his name or an encounter with the man himself.
Rin is driven by revenge, simple as that, and because of events in his past he has become very distrustful and hides behind a shell of the person he used to be. As a child, he had always looked up to his half-brother, awed of his talents and strengths, wanting to be like him and garner his praise and attention. In order to be like Shiki, he joins Bl@ster, a street fighting game played across the urban areas of Japan with money and status as its prizes, and eventually forms Pesca Corsica, a team that becomes infamous as being extremely brutal and strong. Rin ends up enjoying the fighting and being very skilled at it, though what he enjoys most is being with his close friends, one of which he is in love with and shares a striking resemblance with Akira (who Rin meets much later). Years pass and one day Shiki appears before Rin unexpectedly, seeming to acknowledge and even care for him, asking him about his life and whether or not he still likes stargazing. So distracted by his own joy, he lets slip the location of his team's hideout, which leads to the biggest regret of Rin's life when he later returns to the hideout to find nearly all of his teammates slaughtered in cold blood, Shiki having been hired to kill them all.
It is then that Rin vows that he'll have revenge, that he'll kill Shiki no matter what it takes or die trying because he “cannot rest until one of them dies”. 'Die trying' is not something to be taken lightly, because he has so little concept of self-worth at present, wishing that he had died with his friends that terrible night and believing that he isn't deserving of any kindness, happiness, or saving from his fate. He doesn't put his faith in other people easily, and because he blames himself for tragic happenings in his life he holds a strong hatred for himself, a self-deprecating aspect he has that isn't something he lets other people get glimpses of. Who can blame him when his friends would have never died if he hadn't told his brother where their hideout was? It also, most notably, doesn't help that the members of the team that survived believe Rin betrayed them on purpose, blaming him for the whole ordeal and not allowing him to explain himself no matter how much he pleaded with them.
His past is the reason why he is so unwilling to open up to Akira and Keisuke, even though they quickly bond and become something akin to friends while they live in Toshima. Had Akira not looked so much like Kazui, the man Rin had been in love with, he probably would have left them alone and not seem to, at least to an extent, want to get to know them. He repeatedly tells Akira that he finds him attractive, that he likes his face, though it isn't revealed until later that he resembles Kazui. In the beginning, this is the only reason that Rin seems to care about him, but he gradually comes to have genuine feelings for him and Keisuke as well, opening up to them slowly and expressing much worry over their safety. When Akira starts to truly understand and care for Rin, he remarks, “Are you really that afraid of trusting someone?” He is, deeply so.
When it comes to Shiki, Rin loses all reason and is clouded by hatred, anger, and melancholy. Given the chance to be able to fight his brother if given the tags Akira possesses, Rin threatens to kill him if he doesn't comply, fighting him and trying to convince him by stating that his friendliness had all been an act and he should have been more careful trusting him. While fighting his brother, Akira intervenes before Shiki can kill Rin, and though one might think such an act should receive gratitude he is instead screamed at in anguish because Rin had wanted to die. He will never forgive or forget what Shiki has done, what mistakes he's made, and in order to try to break ties with Akira, for fear of him betraying him or dying at Shiki's hands as well, he states that he'll never forgive Akira for stopping his death from occurring.
Rin is a good actor, being able to trick people into thinking that he really is just an untroubled and happy kid who adores fighting. Those things aren't untrue about him, but they're merely simple facets of who he is, ones that hide many secrets and other aspects of his personality in an attempt to protect his damaged heart.
Abilities: Rin's strongest fighting attribute is his agility. He is very quick, swift and nimble with his movements, and he moves fast enough to make it very difficult to find openings to attack him back. He has skilled accuracy with his daggers, as well as a sword, able to aim for vital areas of a person's body in order to dispatch them in one way or another. His physical strength may not be very prominent because of his small stature, but that didn't stop him from being the leader of a very brutal and strong fighting group in the past, nor has it stopped him from being able to survive in the harsh surroundings of Toshima, with people always trying to kill or cause serious harm to each other. Very light on his feet, Rin can go by unnoticed if he wants to be, and uses anything that he can to his advantage.
